FUN is a forum for oil companies and authorities
in Norway that focuses on matters related to forecasting and uncertainty evaluation of
future oil and gas production. The forum, which was established in May 1997, has 18 member
companies plus the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD).
During the eighties and the first half of the nineties, Norwegian oil production levels
were substantially higher than long term forecasts envisaged. The use of new technology
within reservoir description and drilling are major contributors to this increase in
production. |

Norwegian oil production as
predicted for 22 major oil fields compared with actual production.
The forecasts represent forecasts made during the original developmentplans, 1990, 1993,
and 1996.
On 14 November, 1996, a work group was established with representitives
from BP, Mobil, Norsk Hydro, Saga, Shell, Statoil, and the NPD. The purpose of this
workgroup was to recommend further efforts to improve forecasting and uncertainty
evaluation of future petroleum production. The work group recommended
 | to use multidisciplinary evaluation of both short and long term forecasting where people
from reservoir/geology, drilling, production, and marked environments are
represented, |
 | to evaluate uncertainty in both short and long term forecasting, |
 | to increase the companies competence in forecasting and uncertainty evaluation in short-
and long term, |
 | that the companies continuosly evaluate the possibilities in maximising the
resources,
including possibilities for future improved recovery, |
 | to establish a forum on forecasting and uncertainty evaluation.
|
FUN was established in a meeting at the NPD on 12 May, 1997.
